First fruits

I took the boys to the farmers' market today to pick up our first share in our CSA. Our first share included zucchini, mustard greens, swiss chard, green onions, and wild amaranth. One of the awesome things about this CSA is the global nature of the produce we receive; the amaranth does not resemble the grain we know by the same name at all. It is instead a green that can be eaten both cooked and raw, and it is a staple in the diet of those in Burundi. I have yet to try it, but I plan on stir frying it with chicken, onion, tomato, garlic, and some lemon and serving it with rice. I'll let you guys know how it is!

This is Zawadi, the farmer we are buying from, and her niece. Zawadi is from Barundi, and has been in the US since 2007. This is her first year as a CSA farmer, and she also cares for her niece and nephew. I'm very excited about getting to know more about her and her culture!
