The elusive light at the end of the tunnel

March 03, 2008

We're still struggling a bit at our house. I don't even have it in me to take pictures of the second newborn hat I knit. The toddler is still sick, and hubby and I had the intestinal ickies over the weekend. I keep thinking that we're nearing the end; then we wake up to a kiddo who barfed in his crib in the middle of the night and slept in it, or we have another round of 10 dirty diapers in an hour. Turns out that the light I keep seeing at the end of this tunnel so far has only been a firefly.

Fortunately, hubby's parents are wonderful people who were willing to sacrifice their own safety from the nasty virus we had to come and help. My mother-in-law even cleaned my house and did some laundry on Saturday, took the sick toddler for the day yesterday so we could work at a Bridal show, and made us an awesome home made dinner complete with turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, peas, corn, and homemade wheat crescent rolls! After all she's done for us in the last few days, you'd think we'd be more thankful, but, nope, we gave the intestinal ickies to her!

In other dark news, I read this article today on the front page of the KC Star. Being the analytical artist that I am, I was quite intrigued. How black can black get? When is it black enough? If this type of black was around during Yves Klein's day, would we have Klein black instead of Klein Blue? What would a color field painter do with this if he/she could use it out of a tube? And, how much is this going to cost? Hubby'd really like a black backdrop made out of the stuff.

I always found the science of color interesting. I used to spend a bit of time teaching the science behind color to my students when I was still in a classroom. I, honestly, had no idea that there was even a need to chase down a blacker black. The article lists a host of applications for the "new" black stuff that range from astronomy to solar energy.

As much as I love the idea of a blacker black, I have to wonder if the technology they created didn't somehow come and eat the light at the end of our tunnel... ;)

The good news is that hubby and I were each only truly out of commission for one day, and not the same one. He even worked from home on Friday, my worst day, so I could have a sick day. Mommy's with toddlers don't get sick days, so I'm a pretty lucky mommy. And we had nice enough weather to air the house out a bit yesterday. Things really are looking up around here. Hopefully my next post will be some and I a photo of something I've completed to go along with it. For now, enjoy the new found blackness.

this new black was discussed on NPR's program "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me". Speculating on a name to distinguish it from just ordinary black, they came up with Blackety-black-black-black. Perfect!
