Where the sidewalk ends

I loved Shel Silverstein when I was growing up. Actually, I still love his work; I can't wait to share his poems and stories with my own kids.

Hubby and I have had several occasions in life where we've come to the end of the sidewalk, both literally and metaphorically. You know those unexpected places you find when your walking someplace and the sidewalk, well, just stops? And then there are the natural endings that occur in life, changing jobs, moving, having a baby, where everything seems to change all at once. It seems like my sidewalk has been ending for a very long time. Putting it that way makes it sound all bad, but it's not. It's been tough, but we're definitely headed for a good place. And we're thrilled with the directions we've been going.

All of that said, this is the last post about the basket o' stuff I made. That stack up there is two swaddle blankets and one very long (6 yards) wrap to be used as a sling. The green blanket on top is a ribbed interlocking knit bound in 1/2 inch flannel bias tape (won't do THAT again...). The bottom piece in banana yellow is the sling/wrap. The toddler loved being swaddled or worn, so the directions in this book were used a lot in our house. I lent my copy to my sister-in-law along with these three wraps.

The middle white piece is a pretty piece of light weight interlocking knit that I made into a large, single thickness swaddle blanket. The toddler slept swaddled until he was more than 9 months old. I figure that if their little guy has that preference, they will need something larger and light weight for summer swaddling. I made this one super easy; I simply cut out the square and added a decorative stitch about a 1/2 inch from the edge of the fabric. The interlocking knit won't ravel, so I didn't even bother with a hem.

I also made a fabric box for them. I've been dieing to try this out. It was much easier than the instructions made it sound. And I'm planning on making a few to use around our house someday. I think this one is 9 by 7 by 11 inches. I used a white twill for the outside and a simple blue and white stripe cotton for the inside; both fabrics were remnants from JoAnn's.

While I'm on the topic of the sidewalk ending, along with all the big plans I mentioned yesterday, I'm also planning on redoing this blog. My school teaching sidewalk ended a while back, so it only makes sense to rename the blog. Keep watching, I'll post more information as decisions are made, but for the time being, I am open to suggestions.
