Truck-cicle

December 12, 2007

It's still frozen here. Literally, everything outside in encased in ice, and it's making our view rather mono-chromatic. It's beautiful, yet eerie at the same time.

After feeling trapped in the house by the cold, snow, and ice for a few days, I decided to grab the stroller and head for a mall this afternoon. I got the toddler and me sufficiently bundled to get in the car in the garage. I even remembered to check the back of the car for the stroller. Nope. Not in the garage either. So that means it's in the truck. With the toddler bundled and safely strapped into his car seat in the car, I hit the unlock button on the truck, (Which does not physically fit in our garage, and as such is parked on the driveway. It is covered with the remainder of last weeks 3 inches of snow and all the the ice we got yesterday.) and walked down the driveway to get the stroller. Turns out that I no longer had an ordinary F150, but rather a frozen version that I will refer to as the truck-cicle. My truck was encased in snow and ice, and since we weren't planning on driving it anytime soon, we hadn't cleared the driveway around it either. It was literally frozen to the asphalt.

I was silly. I decided to pull on the door handle anyway. No luck, but I did slip and catch myself before I hit the ground. I could hear the warm pretzel calling my name from the mall, so I got even sillier. I decided to skate on the ice around the truck to the other side. Maybe I told myself, I can get in over there. Halfway around the back of the truck my silliness became quite apparent; I started to slide down our rather steep ice covered driveway. I caught myself on the bumper of the truck, but my grip was short lived, the truck bumper was covered in ice too. So I started sliding again. And I braced myself again somehow. And then it happened. I slipped a third and final time falling squarely on my right hip and promptly began "sledding" down the driveway on my side all the while wondering where I would land and laughing the whole time. (If any of my neighbors happened to catch this on video, please let me know. I'll happily sign permission to submit to America's Funniest Home Video for a sizable percentage of the winnings.)

When I finally stopped sliding, I think I was halfway to the street, I began to wonder how I was going to get up. I found a dry patch and proceeded to skate my way uphill on frozen grass to try the other side of the truck. No luck getting the stroller. We wound up walking all of Target and not buying anything. And there were no warm pretzels either!

I'd love to show you pictures of the truck-cicle, but it melted today. I started this post yesterday and didn't have time to finish it until now. Oh, and if you see my hubby, please tell him how wonderful his is for cleaning off enough of the truck for me to safely drive it today before he left for work this morning. And he even had dinner on the table when I got home tonight. I'm a lucky woman.
