Literally! Hubby had a photo shoot in Lawrence tonight, so he wasn't going to be home for dinner, bath, and bedtime for the baby. I planned a trip to the park after snack to pass our usual evening fussy time. I even had the heels from three loaves of bread saved up to feed the ducks.
We have an awesome park about a 1/2 mile from our house with lakes, fishing, ducks, etc. So I looked at the clouds and figured that if it did rain, it wouldn't last long, we could just wait it out. I put the baby in the stroller, the bread on the handles, and we walked to the park. I even checked the radar; only tiny, widely scattered, showers.
It was sprinkling a bit when I spotted the ducks on the far side of the lake. I off roaded the stroller to get us close to them and opened up the sack of bread. I showed the baby how to throw the bread to the ducks. I gave him a piece of bread. And he ate it! The fact that the bread was for the ducks was lost on him entirely!
I proceeded to feed the ducks while he watched and continuously signed his sign for "doggie". (Every animal is a doggie, even the dinosaurs at T-Rex the other night.) And then the sprinkles became raindrops, and the raindrops fell harder, and faster, and bigger. The tree we were under was no longer any protection at all from the rain. I had to off road in what was quickly turning to mud back to the sidewalk and RUN in my Birkenstocks around he lake to a shelter. We wound up walking laps around the shelter for about 15 minutes waiting for it to stop.
You'd think that was it right? Nope, I was smart enough to head straight for home as soon as it let up, but it just wasn't meant to be. We didn't even make it back to our neighborhood before it was pouring on us again. Fortunately there's an empty house for sale on the corner at the entrance to our hood. We made use of the front porch. After waiting another 5 minutes, I called our next door neighbor to see if she cold come and get us. Her husband was kind enough to stop on his way home. He even got out in the rain with his umbrella to help me load the stroller, unload it, and walk us up to our front door!
Hope you stayed dry today. And as soon as I got the baby out of his wet clothes and into hi highchair for diner, it was done!
