We're back from our week long vacation to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, and we had a wonderful time. We stayed at the Grand Geneva Resort. While I'll spare you the details of our trip, it is interesting to note that the resort was formerly one of Hugh Heffner's Playboy Clubs. It is now an upscale spa resort that boasts two golf courses, four restaurants, numerous pools, a small lake, riding stables, a complete fitness center, a family hotel with an indoor water park, condos, and the Marcus Vacation timeshares.
The spa was really quite amazing. I spent four hours there last Tuesday afternoon. It was a wonderful way to start a long vacation. I decided last week that the European concept of going on "holiday" is really a good idea. They take two or more weeks to go somewhere on vacation.
At our house, until last week, all vacations except our honeymoon to Walt Disney World, involved going somewhere for fewer than four or five days and cramming everything we could into the time we had. We learned a new concept when we went to the Elms in Excelsior Springs for our anniversary: relaxing! Doing nothing is really quite enjoyable and very good for you. We discovered that doing nothing together is good for a marriage.
As a teacher it is easy for me to get the time off (summer) to get out of town for an extended holiday. My husband, however, is not a teacher but a small business owner; he finds it much more difficult to get anytime off at all, let alone a whole week. When is America going to wise up and realize that life is too short to not give us more time off to enjoy ourselves?
