Jam Packed

June 21, 2005

We saw the very beginning of a commercial last night that started with these words. That's when it hit me. I've made two batches of jam in the last couple of days: strawberry and strawberry blueberry. What hit me was why they call it jam. I put all that fruit in only 4 or 5 jars for each batch! You jam the fruit in the jar; therefore, you get jam.

Every time I make jam, I am reminded of the "Friends" episode when Monica makes TONS of it. Our favorite part is when Joey declares that he has discovered "jam crackers". I haven't tried this method of jam consumption, but I do like it on Ezekiel toast with fresh ground peanut butter!

Today I found out exactly how much stuff we can jam into a closet in our house over a six year period. I found stuff we didn't even know we had: my husbands tassel from his high school graduation, picture frames we were given as wedding gifts that really aren't our style, clothes that don't fit either of us anymore (and are way out of style), a bathrobe I replaced two years ago, and several pillows we don't use. Most of the "jam" in our closet is on its way out the door in one way or another.

I also discovered another type of "jam" today. No, it wasn't traffic, but it did involve my schedule. I wanted to get more done today than I could accomplish in one day. My schedule was "jam packed" today. Looking back, I see that this is the case most days. Too bad that jam doesn't taste as good as the kind in jar; I make it every day.

Much like there is a lot of spinning in my life, I am finding that there is a lot of jam. Maybe if I could get rid of the negative spinning and jam and keep the good kinds of both, I could be a lot more relaxed.

But there is something wonderful and nostalgic about going through a closet full of our old stuff. I like making jam, but I also like eating it.
