I grew up in Houston, Texas. I remember quite well the horribly hot summers. I always know when the "dog days" of summer have arrived here in KC. I don't have to go outside; I don't have to watch the weather or look at the thermometer. All I have to do is watch our dog. Our 85 pound yellow lab, Keva, begins spending all day in the basement and sleeps even more than usual as soon as it gets too hot.
Officially, it got hot here this week. Keva even thought about telling me no when I got the leash at 10:00 this morning for our run. She looked at me for a minute, thought, and then got excited. After two miles she was delirious; when we got to our street, she forgot to turn.
Tonight after our walk, she came in the house and started drinking with her choke collar and leash still attached! It is so hot and humid here, I thought I woke up in the wrong state this morning. It really feels just like home.
Actually, Keva can predict all kids of weather. We know a thunderstorm is coming when she goes and hides under the bed in our room. We also know it's getting colder when she gets really frisky. I'm sure that most dogs do things that can be used to predict the weather, it's just always surprising to think that an 85 pound beast feels the need to hide from anything, especially a little thunder.
Maybe it'll cool off a little in the near future and I can coax Keeves out of the basement...
