Winter in his garden

The biggest boy appropriated party of our front yard within the last few weeks as his garden. (I confess that I am hoping to talk him into a sunnier location in the backyard when planting season arrives.) He has spent a great deal of time out there grooming the ground and literally arranging the mulch. He even hauled one of the chairs from the kids’ table in the basement, which is an antique!, up to provide him with seating and rearranged the potted “plants” from near the front door. I love what he’s done with the place, and he has drawn everyone out the door in a season in which we normally only pop out occasionally for quick trips. The baby has even gotten in on the action.

Respite

We celebrated the baby’s 1st birthday yesterday (and I promise to post photos of all of it soon), and getting finished with his party left me with a tiny bit of room to breathe. I crashed on the couch last night and folded clothes while watching tv with Hubby. My need for a break was wonderfully coupled with the most amazing weather today; I don’t know what our official high was today, but I saw 63 this afternoon! I took the boys to the park this morning, and this afternoon the biggest boy and I spent our time on a blanket in the yard knitting and drawing. It. Was. Bliss. I seriously considered laying down in the sun on that blanket and taking a nap; the knitting won my attention this afternoon, however.

I should do this more often. Really.

A New Celebration

Most of you know that my sister passed away on Earth Day 13 years ago. It was just 3 days before her 27th birthday, and this year, finally, after 12 years of struggle I finally found a way to observe both. We started out by taking advantage of a free day at Powell Gardens for Earth Day; I braved it and took all 3 boys (at the time under 5) by myself. We had a blast. Then on April 25, when my sister would have turned 40, we had cake, a homemade pound cake with chocolate meringue frosting. I was planning on posting the frosting recipe, but I really can’t remember how I made it. It was delish, though, and I will replicate it at some point and post it as soon as I figure it out.

After years of watching horrible things happen during the time in which these events happened, it was amazing to finally break free and celebrate! I watched the Columbine High School Massacre, and then, on April 22 the year after my sisters death, spent 3 hours in front of the school I taught at, across the street from a large wooded park, while we waited through a copy cat bomb threat on our own building. Every year it was something. I finally moved on, and I was thrilled to have my 3 boys with me.

A morning in the trees

I took the boys to visit the Overland Park Arboretum last Tuesday morning. The weather was perfect, I’ve been dying to go there, and the boys wanted to be outside but not at a park. It was a PERFECT trip, and I can’t wait to go back with them again!

Campfire, backyard style

We had another fun filled family dinner tonight. While it was eaten mostly around our dining room table in the warmth of the house, it was cooked outdoor on sticks over an open flame. I was a bit disappointed that my boys don’t like toasted marshmallows or smores as much as I do, but all in all it was a good, fun dinner. I loved having us all around the fire together!
