My wonderful mother-in-law celebrated a birthday earlier this week. That’s right, the mom of four, has a birthday so dangerously close to Mother’s Day that they sometimes coincide. Mind you, I was born on Christmas Eve. If anyone can get sharing birthday and a holiday, I cans. This year I was determined to make sure she was pampered for both. We went together with one of Hubby’s brothers to get her a gift certificate to get her nails done for Mother’s Day, and for her birthday we put together a basket with a book of recent photos of the boys and some bath salts and scrubs.

The salts and scrubs were so easy to make, and you probably have most of the ingredients in your bathroom and pantry already. I’m surprised that I haven’t done this before, and when Hubby got home, he smelled the bath salts and requested some for himself. I will definitely be making more of this stuff soon, very soon!

Olive Oil Salt Scrub

Fill what ever size glass jar you like almost full with Epsom salts or sea salt. Top this with olive oil until the jar is essentially full; let it bubble as the oil makes it’s way to the bottom. Stir or put the lid on and shake (a great job for a little helper!) until it moves freely. If it won’t move freely, add a bit more oil; if it settles and has a lot of oil on the top, add more salt. Use this scrub on especially tough, calloused places like hand, feet, elbows, and knees.

Relax Bath Salts

This recipe fills a pint size jelly jar perfectly.

  • glass jar
  • heaping cup of Epsom salt or sea salt
  • 1 – 2 T baking soda
  • 20 drops (or more) of lavender essential oil
  • 10 drops of eucalyptus essential oil
  • the contents of one chamomile tea bag
  • 1 teaspoon of glycerin (optional)

Mix all of the ingredients together in the jar thoroughly.

Honey Vanilla Sugar Scrub

This larger recipe will need a larger jar, like a half quart canning jar. I used one I’d found at a rummage sale.

  • larger glass jar
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 – 4 T glycerin
  • 2 T honey
  • 2 T baking soda
  • 1 T vanilla

Mix all of the ingredients together; this will take some serious stirring. Be certain that you do a good job of scraping the sides as you work. This is a good all purpose exfoliating scrub.

Go pamper yourself, someone you love, or both, and let me know how you like the salts and scrubs.
